Self-Love is Modest

Daily Dose - April 20, 2020

Self-love is quietly successful. Knowing that all we are and all we have is because of God’s unfailing love, mercy, and grace toward us, we have no need to boast. Our “stuff” doesn’t have the power to save us. Only Jesus. That’s God’s point. We have because God gives and gives generously, exceedingly, and abundantly. We live because Jesus died.

The bible is replete with warnings about pride and arrogance because we must not set anything above God. Instead of boasting about self, self-love brags about God as the source of every good gift, opportunity, idea, provision, possession, knowledge, and wisdom that we enjoy lest we mistakenly make our education, job title, salary, credit score, (fill in the blank), and our own abilities our god.

Self-Love Affirmation

Just for today, I love myself by defining my worth by God’s love for me. I release the need to prove my value by possessions or achievements. I am exactly where I am supposed to be. I am becoming all God created me to be. I love you, [your name here]!

Open and Receive:

  • Stand in front of a mirror.
  • Look into your eyes.
  • Say the affirmation aloud.
  • Repeat several times throughout the day.

It may feel strange, but keep trying! Let the truth set you free.

5 Minute Fill-Up

When God instructs us to be modest about our abilities, achievements, and successes, He is not asking us to belittle ourselves. To belittle ourselves is to ridicule God as our Creator and discredit his masterpiece. Rather, God is simply asking us to maintain the proper perspective.

Magnify Him as the unlimited source of all we are, all we have, and all we accomplish. Be a witness to His provision in lean times and times of plenty. Share the testimony of God’s work in our lives for the purpose of encouraging and building others up in their faith, hope, and belief.

God’s power never runs dry… and thus we have what we have. Boast about that!

Be a witness and testify. Crank it loud and sing it proud!

Self-Love Nightcap

God led me into one of my most challenging trials a few years ago to teach me key truths about pride in my own eyes. He stripped me of everything that I had unknowingly put my faith and trust in to keep me safe and make me feel valuable: my home, my degrees, my resume, my near perfect credit score, my job, my salary, my intellect, and my abilities.

When none of those things could save me, “all” I had left was God to love and accept me in the nothingness; Jesus to sustain me in my weakened spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical state; and the Holy Spirit to be my peace.

God put me through a master class in the classic “pride comes before the fall.” He showed me how my pride was merely a peccant cover-up for feeling insecure, unloved, not accepted, not good enough. When all the stuff was gone, God was there. I had to lose the stuff to expose the void of hurt and allow God to fill it with His love.

So now I boast all the more that God is all I ever need and it is God who gives me every good gift.
